Twelve modified 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupes are featured prominently in the Honda booth at the 2010 SEMA Show, which opens today. As the first available sport hybrid, the CR-Z demonstrates new opportunities for vehicle personalization among the import tuner community. Several significant vehicles are being unveiled at the show, including a 2011 CR-Z equipped with MUGEN* accessories, the Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD) CR-Z Hybrid R Concept, the HPD CR-Z Racer and several vehicles equipped with Honda Genuine Accessories.

“With the CR-Z sport hybrid coupe, drivers can achieve the great efficiency of a hybrid car without giving up the fun that many demand from a sporty car,” said Bruce Smith, vice president of Parts Operations for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The combination of greener practicality with style and fun makes this vehicle a perfect fit for young, environmentally conscious buyers looking to further personalize their cars.”

A 2011 CR-Z equipped with MUGEN accessories is also being revealed, and Honda announced that in the spring of 2011, it will begin sales of a limited-edition MUGEN accessory kit for the vehicle. Limited to only 300 complete kits, the package includes: a full MUGEN body kit; a front grille; a rear wing spoiler; 17-inch “XJ” aluminum wheels; sport mats; a unique black aluminum shift knob and a billet aluminum oil-filler cap. Further, after purchase, each owner will receive a unique serial-number plaque designating each kit as one of 300 available. All of the painted parts will come color-matched to each of the five available CR-Z colors. Pricing details will be made available closer to the on-sale date.

Also unveiled today were two concept vehicles from HPD: the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and the HPD CR-Z Racer. Though neither vehicle is intended for sale, HPD, Honda’s North American racing company, was determined to demonstrate the potential of the CR-Z for both street and racing performance. Both vehicles share many performance enhancements, with the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept highlighting Honda-designed street styling and the HPD CR-Z Racer opting for serious racing capability. To demonstrate that capability, HPD will campaign two HPD CR-Z Racers at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race in December. HPD enhancements to both cars include: a turbocharger and upgraded IMA™ hybrid system, resulting in an estimated combined 200 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque; performance clutch; limited-slip differential; ‘circuit-tuned’ suspension; upgraded brakes and aerodynamic components. Two vehicles were on display to demonstrate currently available Honda Genuine Accessories. So let’s take a look at what I see as the top 5 e-cigarette cartomizer trends.

5. Variations of the Clear Cartomizer
The CE2 clearomizer itself is a fairly new entrant in the e-cigarette industry. The hallmark of these cartos is a clear tube and the heating coil perched on a tube near the top of the device. At first the only innovation in this design was that it came in two sizes.

Seemingly overnight, dozens of different variations of the cartomizer have sprung up. They range in simple changes like designing specifically for eGo e-cigarettes. There are also more radical designs that look almost nothing like the original.

Many of the new designs just hold more liquid, while some try to improve certain shortcomings such as leakage or poor wicking. Other clear cartos get away from the CE2 engine completely.

You can now find otherwise average cartomizers sporting clear exteriors rather than metal shells. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to put a clear shell on a cartomizer that is otherwise stuffed with filler. There’s not really anything to see. Of course there are some radical new clearomizer designs that have hit the market…

4. Horizontal Coil Cartos
There are also clearomizers that feature their coil oriented horizontally and on the bottom of the device. These designs depart quite radically from the CE2 style cartomizers that dominated the genre. In fact, one of the most talked about example of this style is the heir apparent to the CE2, the CE3 Smokymizer.

The hallmark of this design is a coil located at the bottom of the cartomizer. The coil has a shroud covering it to prevent e-liquid leakage. The G4 cartomizer was one of the first on the market sporting this radical new design.

Initial reviews of these devices were mixed along with consumer reception of the devices. Much like the original CE2, improvements over time will likely settle out this style of cartomizer. The second and third generation devices have been in the hands of consumers for a while now.

Beyond clear carto designs, there are also traditional style cartomizers that are moving to the bottom coil. A new entrant into the market is the horizontal coil cartomizer made by Kanger. This cartomizer can be found in a number of places. For example, V2 Cigs’ popular new cartomizers use this design.

3. Enormous Cartos
Apparently the idea of bigger is better holds true in the e-cigarette industry. Original cartomizers came out with around a .5-1.0ml capacity. XL cartos housing around 1.5ml came out and the market stayed there for a while.

Now it seems like every day I see a vendor announcing even bigger cartomizers. The first escalation was to the giant CE2s which held 2.5ml. Next was 3ml quickly followed by 5ml. This isn’t just limited to CE2s. Along with the CE2s, there are now huge versions of the dual coil cartomizer. There’s even large versions of your plain ol’ boring cartos.

2. Carto Tanks
Holding nearly a day’s worth of e-liquid, carto tanks fit right into the plus-sized theme. The tank started out life in the modders community with modifications like the 3ml syringe mod.

CE2 internals were commonly used in cartomizer tanks produced both by individuals and the early retail units. Some tanks had a similar capacity as the XL versions of the CE2. Other models were more extreme. One example housed nearly 10ml of e-liquid!

At some point, someone figured out that by cutting slots or poking holes into a traditional cartomizer, it could absorb e-liquid while submerged in a tank. Hence came what is now the most popular version of the cartomizer tank. Now, even the manufacturers are getting in on the action, Vapor Alley carries an inexpensive tank made by SmokTech.

1. DCCs
For the most part all those tanks come with a dual coil cartomizer. That goes to show just how popular DCCs are. Dual coils seemed like a gimmick at first. That notion quickly wore off. Dual coils are hands-down one of the most popular types of cartomizers on the market today.

Dual coil cartomizers feature two heating coils run in parallel to provide more heat. Pretty much every store carries them. Fans of the devices rave about their ability to produce large amounts of warm vapor. The cartomizers are also available in just about every form factor imaginable.
